What led you to want to work at Sustainable Northwest?

I am a member of the Yakama Nation. I wanted to work here partly because Sustainable Northwest works with Tribes. As a Native, I like knowing that my work contributes to the good work we’re doing for and with my people. Not many employers offer that. I was also excited when I joined and learned that another staff member was also part of my Tribe.

There is a painting of my mother and grandmother on display at the Yakama Cultural Center. They are riding horses in a parade. I was born on the Yakama Reservation but moved to Portland when I was in second grade and have been here ever since. I visit my mom on the reservation as often as I can.

How did your educational and career path lead you to Sustainable Northwest?

I earned a bachelor’s degree in communications studies from Portland State University, with a minor in law and legal studies. I figured with those two, I could work anywhere. However, over time, I realized that I was not super outgoing and preferred jobs where I could work independently. So, I earned an accounting certificate to move into finance. Later, I took additional coursework in accounting and finance. I like accounting because I can just be here with my paperwork and my computer and get stuff done.

What do you like about working at Sustainable Northwest?

I like the office and the people. I like that we work with Tribes. And I know the processes here – it’s very similar to my previous job, but much less stressful. Before, I worked in social services, including helping people pay their rent. Some months, depending on the budget, I had to decide whose rent got paid and whose didn’t. I am grateful that I don’t have to make decisions like that now.

Passions outside of work: My dogs. And I have a thing for unclaimed property. Just the other day I helped Sustainable Northwest recover some unclaimed property from the old office location, basically checks that had gone missing in the move. My Tribe has over 1,000 items on unclaimed property.

One thing you think is overrated: TikTok

Favorite thing to do on a day off: Sleep

Favorite place in the PNW:  The beach. Any of them, I like beaches.

Reading recommendation: The Willamette Week newspaper’s star signs. These are the best horoscopes I’ve ever seen.

Cats or dogs? Dogs (Out of respect for cats, we won’t print what she said about them).
