“The communities of Lakeview and Paisley would not be engaged in proactive initiatives such as biomass and forest plan participation if it were not for Sustainable Northwest’s early involvement in our processes. We are indebted to SNW for their assistance and continuing partnership.”

Upstream 21 Acquires Two Wood Products Enterprises

HFHC partners Jefferson State Forest Products and Community Smallwood Solutions acquired by Upstream 21

Recently, Upstream 21 acquired two community-based wood products enterprises from the rural Northwest. Jefferson State Forest Products (JSFP) in Hayfork, CA and Community Smallwood Solutions, LLC (CSS) in Wallowa, OR.  Both JSFP and CSS are partner enterprises of Sustainable Northwest’s Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities Partnership. SNW initially connected both JFSP and CSS to resources enabling them to increase production efficiency.

These acquisitions increase Upstream 21’s growing portfolio of regional natural resource businesses advancing community-based sustainable development.  JSFP uses high quality hardwoods to manufacture custom, handcrafted produce and store fixtures. Their largest client is Whole Foods Market.  In 2003, JFSP was the recipient Cecil D. Andrus Leadership Award for Sustainability and Conservation.

CSS is a small-diameter post and pole facility that specializes in roundwood products, including fencing, hop poles and tree stake. The facility was a for-profit project of Wallowa Resources, a long-time partner of Sustainable Northwest.  As a parent company, Upstream 21 will provide assistance and resources while maintaining the community-based management team at each facility.

Upstream 21 was formed to put financial and other resources to work in successful, small companies and help them improve their financial, social and environmental performance.  They assist in growth and development by providing expertise in management, strategic decision-making, and access to capital and other resources.
