The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs will have their tribal interest and Indigenous Knowledge integrated into the management of the Mt. Hood National Forest in newly proposed legislation from Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer.

Blumenauer introduced the Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge Recreation Enhancement and Conservation Act on May 9th, 2022. Blumenauer shared that “the bill contains a groundbreaking model of tribal co-management directing the Forest Service to co-develop a management plan with the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs to protect and enhance Tribal Treaty resources within agreed-upon Treaty Resource Emphasis Zones…The legislation also enhances recreation, transportation, and conservation on Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge.”

Sustainable Northwest was honored to work with the Tribes' leadership and staff over several months as they developed the innovative language in the bill to address tribal rights, especially to protect their lands from wildfire and to continue access to their traditional hunting, fishing, and gathering areas on the National Forest.
